The Thing You’re Already Doing

3 min read By Jeremy Forsberg

Why doesn’t the market know what you do?

There’s a type of business owner we talk to who’s been solving problems for years and has no idea that’s sellable. A supplier who figured out a hinge problem three other firms said was impossible. A lawyer who built a firm around hiring people who actually care. A doctor doing work most of his field hasn’t caught up to yet. The work is real. The market doesn’t know it exists.

That gap is where positioning lives.

Should you invent a differentiation angle?

Most positioning work starts by inventing one. Something clever, something that stands out, something nobody else is saying. The better approach is simpler: look at what you’re actually doing that’s unusual and say it plainly.

What makes a business genuinely different?

The unusual thing is almost always structural, not stylistic. It’s a way you work. A standard you hold. A type of person you hire. Something you decided early and stuck with. It’s not a messaging angle. It’s a fact about how you operate, and once you see it, it becomes the frame for everything you say.

Why do owners miss their own advantage?

The hard part isn’t finding it. It’s believing it matters. Most owners who’ve built something real assume everyone does what they do, because they’ve never had a reason to look around. Competitors cut corners they won’t. Hire people they wouldn’t. Keep clients they’d have let go. From the inside, the alternative is invisible, so your own standard looks normal.

That’s the moment where the work starts. Not crafting the story. Seeing it clearly enough to tell it.

FAQS

What is business positioning?

Positioning is how your market understands what makes you different and who you’re for. Good positioning describes something true about how you operate, so customers can see why you’re the right choice.

How do I find what makes my business different?

Look at your decisions, not your messaging. What standards do you hold that others don’t? What problems do you solve that competitors turn away? What did you decide early on that you’ve never compromised? The answer is usually something you take for granted.

Is positioning the same as branding?

No. Branding is how you look and sound. Positioning is the substance underneath, the fact about your business that your branding should express. A strong brand built on weak positioning ends up saying nothing in particular.

What if competitors make the same claim?

Anyone can say they care or they’re the best. A structural difference comes with proof: the problem you solved, the process you follow, the people you hire. Lead with the evidence, and the claim takes care of itself.
